Know your numbers

It is important to gain an accurate idea of your financial situation. Things you should work out are:

  • Your taxable income;
  • How much you can afford to borrow;
  • How much you can afford to save;
  • Your house’s value, and the value of your other assets;
  • Your total superannuation; and
  • The amount of tax you pay.

If you already have investments, you can add to that list:

  • Capital gains tax on your property;
  • How much you yield on you investment property; and
  • How much yield you need to make.
